The FDA classifies contact lenses as medical devices that require a prescription from an eye care professional, but the states can determine who qualifies as a licensed prescriber in that state and how and where they may prescribe medicines or medical devices. In recent years, several states have introduced initiatives that would allow contact lenses to be prescribed on the basis of an online refractive test.
J&J Vision position: We believe that contact lens patients deserve care consistent with the high standard of care received in providers' offices, regardless of where or how they receive it.
